New UK Law Targeting Keyless-Car Theft Tools: What It Does and Why It Matters

In 2025 the UK government introduced legislation making it a criminal offence to possess, import, supply or distribute electronic devices designed for keyless-car theft — including relay kits, and jammers. Once the new law comes into force, anyone found with such a device (without a legitimate reason) could face up to 5 years in prison and an unlimited fine. This closes a legal loophole, but police and security experts agree it won’t eliminate relay theft entirely — determined criminals can still import devices illegally or build their own using off-the-shelf electronics. So while the new offence helps, drivers should still protect vulnerable keyless cars.
